I have a M9540 that has about 700 hrs on it. Just lately I am having trouble shifting from 5th gear to 6th gear when traveling on the road. Sometimes it will go right into sixth gear and some times it won't let you. Any body else have this problem before or have any ideas? Thanks for the feed back

I'm sorry but your going to have to be a little more specific as there are 22 sub models, and each one has different drive train options.
If you don't know the exact sub model give us the serial number and we should be able to tell you which sub model it is.

Just looking at the breakdown of the shift mechanism several things are possible, but a simple adjustment of the linkage might be needed.
If you want to fix it yourself instead of immediately taking to a dealer, get the WSM it will give you a breakdown of troubleshooting and adjustments.
If you don't have a local dealer you can get it shipped, just have the serial # in hand to get the right model.

I have the same transmission in my M9960 and have no shifting issues.
The main 6 speed transmission is synchronized. Does it grind or simply not move into 6th?

Sounds like linkage misadjustment.The transmission does not grind. It physically won't let you shift
