I know a couple of other members have run into this before. Where a shaft meets a lip seal and has some grooving so it doesn't seal.

Start out by cleaning the shaft with break cleaner or solvent.

Then I use jb weld to fill the groove. If the groove isn't filled with something. It will show back up in a short period of time.

Then you tap the speedi sleeve on. Just be really careful to no ding it where it meets the shaft.

After install. Wipe off the excess JB weld. Then let sit for a minimum of 8 hours for the JB weld to set up.

Then polish surface with emery clothe before installing lip seals.

Note. The lip on it can be removed with a sharp chisel if in the way. Just do it before polishing with the Emory clothe. :)

After the lip seals are installed. You can just make out the edge of the speedi sleeve.

I have used a lot of speedi-sleeves over the years but never filled in the gouge/wear-groove under the sleeve. I don't see what this extra step provides.

If the groove underneath is deep enough, it will show back up withing a couple months. Means the difference between a tear down in 3 to 4 months or in a year or two ;) Especially when the main seal on the unit retails for $1200

But then again, the equipment I put the sleeve in, can see upwards to 600 hours of use in a month.

Also following the instructions for a speeding sleeve, they actually want you to use a lubricant to install it. Only thing that occomplishes is getting the sleeve to spin on the shaft ;)

JB weld not only fills the groove. But also bonds the sleeve to the shaft. :)

I use gasket eliminator in the grooves. Both ideas bond when they set up and prevent wicking under the sleeve.

If the groove is quite deep, sleeve will contour to groove. Almost like peening it.
Anything between sleeve and shaft will help prevent it. Permatex stud and bearing mount works too.
A shaft , an axle for example is so long a piece of pipe is needed to drive the sleeve.
Federal mogul has speedi-sleeves
Chicago rawhide has redi-sleeves.
All depends on your supplier.
All that is needed (usually) is an accurate shaft diameter or seal number.

Great tutorial.

So is this the beginning of a new topic? Containg how-to threads?

Is this in your tractor??? My God man, when do you sleep? There's only 700 and change hours in a month to begin with!

It's for work. I work for a specialty division of a rental company. Water pumps and generators. Both when they go out, can get started up, and then run for months on end depending on the situation. With the only time they get shut down are to check fluids or service. ;)

I rarely rent things, but a couple of years ago I rented a walk-behind snowblower (wanted to make a rink on the lake but the ice wasn't yet thick enough for the tractor). I got it home and found one auger didn't turn and one track was free-wheeling. Talked to the rental shop on the phone, all their other machines were out and they were closing up for the rest of the weekend shortly. I told him I could probably fix it but didn't want to risk damaging his equipment. His response was that it was rental equipment, therefore it wasn't worth worrying about possible damage.

(I spent the next 2 or 3 hours heating, hammering and turning new pins. When I returned it Monday morning I told them I was only paying for 1/2 a day since I spent the other half fixing their damn blower!)
