After I get my radiator back on my tractor I need to bush hog the edge of a field which has bit of a hill.

I've not used the bush hog yet. So will definitely have some practice on a more level spot first. But can anyone give me any pointers on running it on a short but relatively steep hill? Thanks.

well for sure don't go sideways, and because of the thermosyphun don't go down hill, so the only right whey to do it is going uphill.

Up or down not sideways.
I'm 99.9% sure that the radiator than thermo siphon system doesn't give a hoot if your going up or down a hill. ;)

I'm with wolfman;) i haven't had any issues with the thermo syphon system and hills. My fil's property is nothing but hill and not a lick of trouble bush hogging. The only issue on his slope is having to creep up the hill since they are so steep, the tractor wants to turn into a wheely machine .

I haven't used the tractor on a hill at all yet. I wasn't sure it could haul itself up the hill with the bush hog running behind it. So driving in low, 1st or 2nd gear up or down the hill should be fine? Is there anything else I should look out for? Does the B6100 have an internal overrunning clutch for the PTO? If not how would that affect the operation?

Thanks for your replies.

I don't think the B6100 has an internal over-running clutch, and I would definitely put one on it before mowing a hillside, because the brush hog could push the tractor forward a few feet before stopping.

I installed one on mine. I had to shorten the pto shaft about 4", but a saws all with a good metal blade will go through it pretty quick. The first coupler I got ended up being bad. Ordered the first one from Georgia tractor. Second one I got from fixthatford and worked like a charm. Keeps me from running over the wife's azaleas :D

Never having run a BH on a hill like that would it not be more prudent to back up and come down,, I mean with the weight being on the up hill side and not behind you, you wont risk a chance of flipping ,,, Or am I not understanding

Skeets, your right:) too steep and I just stay away. The issue with mine was not enough weight on the front. Once the extra weight was added, it wasn't an issue. I go slow just to be safe. The other issue with mine is it's only 2wd and them rice paddy tires. They dig good going forward but backwards isn't so hot, especially with weight on the up hill side.
Used to do hills all the time with dads l2250 with fel. Just kept the bucket about an inch off the ground for counter balance. Used the fel to locate rocks as well. We had some pretty steep hill's growing up in Vermont. Never had an issue with the 2250, but I'm definitely a little more particular with the l1501 ;)

Your B6100 does have an overrunning clutch, to confirm this, with the tractor off engage the PTO and grab the PTO output shaft, if it turns in one direction with a clicking sound, yes it will be tight, but in the other direction it will not turn at all.

PTO one way clutch in yellow:

Thanks 76_Bronco, Darren, skeets and wolfman.

I'm not in the situation where I HAVE to go up the hill. The hill is like a bank that gets less steep the more you move away from the edge of the field. It might take a couple minutes extra to drive along the bottom of the bank to get where it is a lot less steep, go up the hill and then back along top of the bank to where I need to BH. That's what I'll do though if that is safer.

Re the overrunning clutch, I'll check that too when I get back home this week. Thanks.
