Greetings. I did try to search but don't seem to be able to find my exact issue. Starting was becoming an intermittent issue. So thought the solenoid was getting tired. So today I switched it out with a new one. When I went to connect the battery the starter began to spin. I verified all wires were correct. Then thought ok, perhaps it was a bad one. Re-installed the old one and it did the exact same thing. I am no wiring genius, but this has me totally stumped. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions???

thanks in advance

step 1 - go to www.kubotabooks.com and download the ZD21-28.pdf in the 'mower' section.

step 2- open it ,goto page 205, says ZD28 upper left... print 1,2,3 copies......

step 3 - remove the B/W ( black / white stripe ) wire from the starter, connect battery, does is spin or not ?
If it spins starter unit is internally defective. If it doesn't spin, check the voltage on the b/w wire .Should be zero but in your case , I bet it has +12 volts.

You are installing the battery feed and other wires onto the wrong lug.

thanks, I will try that. Don't really understand what happened. It did not do it before, but just after I installed the new one and even when I re-installed the old one.

Don't think so. In fact even tried reversing them and still the same result.
I know so, there is no reason that hooking up the wires to the starter should make the starter spin, unless it's being hooked up wrong!

Post pictures of what your hooking up.
I'll point out what's wrong or I'll be happy to eat my words if I'm wrong.

NO tractor wires go to red lug, all wires except spaded wire go to green lug, one spade wire goes to small spade (blue).

Ok two things. First I have it wired exactly as you stated. STill does it. However, I found today something, that to be honest I am unsure of. I assume (and we know what happens when we do that) that the plunger for lack of other words, needs to be in the y shaped yoke in the starter housing. I hope you understand what I mean. How does one get the plunger into the yoke? I tried different ways for an hour and still no joy. Any tips would be appreciated. Not really sure that has anything to do with the starter spinning with the switch off and wired correctly, but I don't know. I appreciate the advice given so far.

Are you saying this lever #140 is not in the slot on the bendix #050?

If that is the case that would 100% be why it's acting all sorts of weird.
And yes that parts not aligned would cause the solenoid contact to stay engaged causing it to spin.

To fix take the 2 nuts #240 and one nut #230(bond wire) off, then remove the 2 #250 bolts, then you will be able to remove and align the lever with the bendix.

Sorry to be a pain. Based on the drawing, then I gather I have to remove the starter to do this?
