ZD 326 starter problem

Over the last couple of weeks, I have trouble starting the mower. Battery is fresh and charged. Starter engages and will turn the engine over, but no more than a partial revolution of the engine. If I repeat this process, several times the mower will eventually start. From my perspective, it would appear the starter solenoid is not allowing the starter gear to stay engage with the fly wheel gear ring, turning the engine over over until it starts.

If anyone has suggestions on how to determine the cause of this issue, and how to correct, please let me know. I think the starter is fine, not so sure about the solenoid. I don't want to buy replacements for either until I know it's necessary.

Thanks

Hard to diagnose electrical issues without being there in person

with that said, does it crank over good for a split second then the engine stops cranking but starter keeps turning? I think that's the way I read it. If that's the case, the possibility is high that the one-way clutch in the starter drive is bad.

I read the post the same way and came to the same conclusion. If that's not the case please explain more fully what's going on.

My reaction is a battery with insufficient output. What is the rated capacity of the battery presently in the mower?

Boost from a much larger battery (car or truck) and see if the same hesitation occurs.

Battery should be rated for at least 475 CCA. Lower capacity battery cannot produce the necessary power to overcome the engine compression.

I had the same problem with a brand new battery install. I re-cleaned all the terminals and posts with a wire brush, applied dialectic grease, problems disappeared. Check your ground connections too.
