I have been considering a WG24 to use with my L3901DT. I know a HST would be better, but would my gear drive still get the job done fairly painlessly?

Since your L3901 has a Live PTO with a dual clutch, it will work fine.

live clutch= OK

its a great grinder & i love mine.
