Wondering if a receiver mounted winch on the 3PH would work on a BX23? I have pulleys/cables etc. and wonder if the battery/alternator would support a 2500#winch? Likely would never get close to the 2500# with pulleys etc. so I could go smaller winch.

I have a winch on by BX which is mounted on a 3pl receiver hitch.
Its primarily used for the crane although I also use it to install the crane pole.
With the top link disconnected I install the pole then winch it up rotating the receiver to the top link.
I dont really use it to pull stuff and would be concerned about overloading the 3pl
Also the 3pl is free to move up and you need to keep that under consideration.

Battery connection is straight forward. Cables run from the battery to the rear under the floor.
The connection at the battery is isolated via a 120a breaker and an Anderson 175a plug at the back.
Normally this is isolated unless using the winch or my sprayer

My WSM for a BX23S shows the alternator output to be 14 to 15 amps at max rpm.

Your winch operation will be totally dependent upon the battery. Prolonged winch operation will mean a dead battery as the alternator cannot provide much current.

Warn winches show the no load current draw of both a 1,500 and 2,500# winch as 20 amps so even if you are not working your winch the alternator cannot keep up.

If this winch project is important to you, consider providing the winch with its own large battery which you charge independent of the tractor before using the winch.

If you have a draw bar, then mount the winch to it as the 3 pt hitch provides no resistance to lifting of the lift arms and you could find the winch pull occurring up too high relative to the rear axle height for safe pulling.

I know when I use the 5000 pound winch on the Kubota side by side, I never turn the engine off because if I did, would probably not start up again. :p

Think my concern would be low voltage. I believe the fuel cut solenoid has to have 9 volts to stay open, if you have one and if the tractor is common rail, low voltage will cause it to shut off as well. I think 9 volts for that too.

Use a 2nd battery and 'battery isolator' ( 2 diodes in a box)..similar setup to snowplow vehicles. That way tractor will always run. I'd mount eh winch battery on the winch frame, as a 'package'.

Very nice set up. Thanks for the pics. The crane pole is for lifting trusses etc?

Thanks everyone. Since I'm thinking skidding only smallish logs I may fore-go the expense and simply use the 'ol "drag em up" method.

I had a 1200# winch on a JD garden tractor, with a garden tractor battery. It was fine for occasional use, given enough time to recharge the battery between uses. I used it to pull it out from a snowbank when blowing or skidding the odd log.

I have a Warn 4700 on a receiver mount that is used on my BX *and pick up). I have a fixed receiver on the front of the tractor. I've used the winch a lot and never ran the battery down. Keep in mind, winching is a short time out of a job, one minute winching and 20 minutes 'doing stuff' letting the battery recover.
I do not come close to using the full capacity of the winch as the tractor is dragged, even in 4wd and the brake set. if I need power, I use block and tackle. Mostly, I use the winch to pull a tree when felling. If it is a giant tree, I have the tree service come. I've used the winch a few times when the tractor was stuck in mud too. Less embarassing than calling the neighbor, again...

That's way I made it for.

Have built 2 sheds using this. Also the winch has a remote which makes it a lot easier to position a beam.

For stumps I just use plasma rope and chains. For the bigger stumps adding some snatch blocks. I have enough of these to add up to 16 blocks which will pull just about anything
