I leave the roots and tops on and hang it for a couple months untill fully dry. The roots and stalks pull moisture from the plant evenly as it dries. Not supposed to wash it either for longest storage. We still are eating last years garlic from the root cellar. The hard neck gets used first and the soft neck is good for a year when properly dried.
Yes, you're doing it the correct/proper way. Ensures best storage.

I should have clarified my method is not recommended.

Will have another patch ready next week.

Thanks. Switching to raised beds is the best thing I ever did.
To be fair to the varmints, I understand why it is sneaking into your garden…it’s quite the spread. Wow, immaculate. Looks like you really take the time to keep it in show shape.

Personally based on your info, I am struggling to figure out how your tomato plants are so tall/big already. When was your last frost? I would have expected NY to have frost to late April early May potentially. Those look great.

Last frost is usually June 1 but this year I got them in over a week early with the warm weather. I start all my plants in grow tents about 8 weeks before they go out. The only way to get the heirloom flavors from 200 years ago along with newcomers. That hot sunny 10 days we just had really helped the mater plants this year.

A little haul about a week ago. My sweet corn should be good near the end of this week and my tomatoes are turning red. We need some rain really bad but I can water the garden a bit to keep it alive.

98 degrees and dry as heck here. Got down to dig the little row of potatoes so they don't cook in this heat.

And then fed the spoils to my fertilizer manufacturers.

N.Y,
Pulled the garlic today. Fairly early from the warm winter. One basket of hard and one basket of soft. Now starting to cure it for longest storage.

One thing I gotta say about the heat this summer is a unbelievable crop of berries.
My sister has raspberrys that she can't pick fast enough this year. Best crop in ten yrs for her. And the wild blueberrys are coming on here in Maine looking like a fantastic season also.

Here are some "Live Free or Die" New Hampshire wild blue berries. A workout hiking up the mountain to get to them.
A family tradition we grew up harvesting them and selling them to buy back to school clothes. Something kids today would not understand. Being poor.

N.Y,
My wife's aunt lives on a mountain just outside of Jackson and we used to go up there to pick blueberries on an old overgrown ski slope. Then we saw bears also like picking them but prefer pre picked ones and just started buying them instead. They make the best pies. Boy the bears up there stink and not fun watching them on the deck eating the basket of blueberries you picked.

N.Y,
Picked the Ailisa Craig onions today. 2 small raised beds grew about 100 pounds that filled my cart. Spread out to start curing. Boy are they sweet and juicy. They will stay good until next March once cured.

Similar situation here with beach plums.
Could pick two bushels in a looooong day.
Sold to wholesaler for $3.50 - $5 per bushel.

Those onions look huge! Nice!

Obviously your raised beds are serving you well. Garlic looked great also.

What region of NYS are you in?

Per my profile, I’m in Chenango County, which is the Southern Tier area, NNE of Binghamton.

I am up in Wayne County. We get a late start in the garden with the lake keeping us chilled in the spring. Was originally from Poughkeepsie before 9/11 brought the city folks and traffic up.
