People can get hurt. Pulling should be from the drawbar which is attached below the axle. Pulling from above the axle could result in flipping the machine.
As I think about the physics of it, that makes sense. Thank you for clarifying.

I have never bought or seen a tractor that doesn’t come standard with a drawbar.

Well, interesting you should say that. I hadn't looked, but sure enough, mine has a drawbar after all. My old John Deere didn't, so I didn't assume a new one would. One less thing to think about.
