Hi all. I bought an old L295 and was told the reverse was gone. Thinking it was/is the reverse gear, I pulled off the cover this morning and found what is shown on the attached pictures. Could anyone look at them and give me some advice please?

I assumed the shaft that the reverse gear is on would go to the front of the tractor and I would access it's holding bolts by way of the clutch inspection plate. As you can see in the picture, the shaft does not go thru the wall in front of the reverse gear. I am assuming something is wrong as this shaft should be more forward.

I did notice one large gear in the pictures that is rounded quite alot on one side as well. I am assuming this needs replaced?

This tractor sat for some time without being run. I changed the trans fluid and only 2 quarts came out and it was white, so there is some rust as moisture was certainly prevalent.

I am not a transmission guy and for what I paid for the tractor I don't mind having this part sent to the shop. I do though, enjoy working and learning and if there is anything that I can do I would rather. Greatly appreciate any thoughts.

You may have to split the tractor front from the rear end to make the repair.

There are very good work shop manuals to down load (free) or you can buy from the dealer.

The splitting is difficult if you’re not on concrete but even then not too bad. If you proceed you should replace the clutch assembly also. There may be a few other things to replace if you want since you have the tractor split (seals,)

I think you will be shocked at what the dealer will charge but you should ask them to see. It requires a good amount of time.

Thank you for the reply. I am in a heated concrete floor shop, so I will probably get a service manual and split it.
Any suggestions on if the shaft is not like it should, or anything else you might see in the pictures. Like the large gear looking worn? Thank you again sir

Yes the gear you showed may need to be replaced along with a smaller gear, or you may be able to turn them 180 degrees on the shaft.

You may have a hard time getting them new but probably can find them used,

Russel, might I ask, do you have any known secret to ease the aligning of the shifter Ford while putting the top back on? Thank you

Unfortunately no.
I do recall that was discussed in the past by North Idaho Wolfman.
Search for posts by him on the subject.

I’ll look at my work shop manual and see what it says.

Thank you sir. I think I’ve read all that I am aware of. I actualy finally got the shifter plate on last evening. Started it up and now it only has 2 gears. I’m gonna pull the shifter cover off and take a look. Man, that was a bigger getting those forks aligned. Hahaha. Thank you again sir

Update. The tractor starts, runs, goes forward and backwards. Might not seem like much, but man is it. Just a recap. I have a Kubota 295. It has japenesse writing on it, so o am assuming a “Gray Market”. Anyway, I had no reverse. I pulled the inspection cover and shift fork covers off to inspect. The shaft that the reverse gear rides on had slipped back into the transmission. After a lot of work and scratching my head, I was able to get get the gear on the shaft and realign the shaft into the housing. I guess the set screws had worked it’s way out and let the shaft ride back. The shift forks were a pain, but after installing the 3 times I did get pretty good at it. I found the reverse shift fork bent on my last attempt. Straightened it snd it works like a top. Now I hope to just work on small things and items I am comfortable with. Thank you for all of your help!

I read the manuals I have and found that they are fairly lacking in information on installing the shifters. Only hints were to be sure everything is in neutral and then move something a little and install the forks holding them in their neutral position (and pray it work). They suggested checking they worked and repeat installation until they were properly working.

Sounds like you followed it to a T!

Good news its working now.

If anyone wants a trick that helped me. I used a pair of small needle nosed vice grips to hold the shift forks in their neutral position. Once I got the forks on their right gears, I released the vice grips and they slid right on. I then raised the side with the pto forks about 1/2 inch and installed the forks over the nubs. You are correct, everything has to be in neutral when you are done
