On my B2301, have notice the last couple times mowing the tachometer needle seems to be what I would call 'fluttering'. Engine rpms sound constant and runs fine/normal, just the needle on the dash bounces ever so slightly (maybe 1/16th of an inch) around the 540 RPM mark. I don't remember it doing this before... always seemed to keep dead steady....but then maybe I just never noticed. Wondering if I should be poking around for a loose cable or wire?

I believe that is a cable drive tachometer (but the drive cable is named “hour meter cable).

If it is cable drive then you can try lubricating the inner cable or see if the inner cable is broken or kinked. New cables appear to be available from your dealer or online dealer.

curious so checked, yes cable driven, so odds are cable is 'damaged', maybe from being kinked or bent too sharp. best to remove from tractor, remove 'core', inspect for ANY 'damage'.... If none, add a 'dry lube' to the core and reinstall.

Back when I repaired cars/trucks professionally, speedometers were still cable driven.
When the speedometer needle wiggled/jumped, you reached up under the dashboard and
disconnected the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer.
Then with a pair of needle nose, you pulled the speedometer cable central/core out of the housing/casing,
and lubricated the cable central/core with speedometer cable grease. Then reassemble.
If it audibly squeaked, then running it dry/unlubricated generally indicated damage to the housing/casing.
The visual indication of that type of damage/wear was the cable central/core looked rusty.
Then the entire assembly required replacement.
Try lubricating that tachometer cable first!
I would recommend using a light wheel bearing type grease over any dry lube.
I still have a partial tube of AC Delco speedometer cable grease in my toolbox.
If you were closer, you could borrow it.

I always used white lithium grease on speedo/tach cables.
If the cable is nasty, I'd remove it completely, pull the inner, flush the outer with brake parts or electrical parts cleaner until the run out was clear. Then clean the inner, and a light film of lube on the inner and reassemble.
