My T1400 mower (purchased new in 1989) is starting to have an issue after running. Once I stop, for fuel, etc, when I try to start it back up nothing happens, not even a "click." If it sits a day or so I can restart it. I have checked the connections to the starter and the seat connections, but that's about all I know to check. I have a feeling the starter is just old and about ready to go. I called my dealer and a new starter is $400. I don't really want to spend a whole lot of money fixing this problem only to have something else go out. It's been an incredible machine these past 28 years and it may just be time to upgrade to a new mower....

Remove the ground cable from the tractor frame and clean that connection thoroughly. It may be tight but rusty.

Post a picture of the starter on the engine. Ebay has some new starters for $60 to $80.

Your next step, absent the desire to do electrical trouble shooting, is to take the starter to a local independent starter and alternator repair shop.

The starter you have wont be unique to Kubota.

They will be able to confirm it is shot and repair it or sell you a Chinese replacement for a lot less money.

If you want to do electrical trouble shooting you need two cheap tools.

About $20

A multimeter and a test light.

The selector switch in the multimeter image is not in the correct position for tractor work. Turn it to the 20 on the left of center or you will get strange readings when measuring voltage.

Come back for instructions on how to do the trouble shooting if you go that route.

Thanks, Dave, I think I found the issue. It appears the negative cable on the battery was very loose. I googled/You-Tubed your suggestion in case it went that far, but hopefully the loose cable was the issue.
