I have an M4-071 tractor with a Land Pride finish mower attached. I cannot release the collar to remove the implement. It feels welded on. How do I free up the collar to remove the mower?

Start by spraying it with a good penetrating spray like PB Blaster, Kroil… on the mechanism and on the inside if possible.

What type of attachment mechanism is it? There are some with a pin, some with a ring that move forward or backwards, some the ring turns a few degrees.

I would recommend that you get the implement out of the way so that will require you to put the implement where you want it then disconnect the three point hitch and pull forward to separate the two halves of the PTO shaft. Then remove the plastic cover on the tractor side to see the actual PTO shaft better.

Remember that you can try to get it moving towards the tractor with gentle taps as well as trying to pull it off. If I recall correctly there are some tractors where the PTO stub on the tractor is removable so that might be the way to go if that is easily done on your tractor.

Good luck.

It’s a ring collar that you press back evenly to release. I’ve sprayed all around it once. I have the liquid wrench penetrating oil on hand.
I’m new to tractors so this is all a learning experience. I will try to get the mower out of the way and I’ll check about removing the PTO stub, that would be great if that were the case. Thank you.

Do not make thinks worse by unbolting the PTO. Keep working on the release mechanism.

OH NO! :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Well I don't have good news for you!
The PTO shaft on the implement was too long and you have forced the PTO locking collar onto the PTO shaft on the tractor.
I really hope you haven't done any serious damage to the PTO drive or the case!

I would be taking the PTO joint apart at the joint and use a gear puller to get it off the shaft.
Make sure the lock stays disengaged when it goes back to the lock position on the shaft on it's way off.

You should not have this much PTO sticking through the collar!

When this happens it usually damages this bearing or the case where that bearing mounts.

You got a good eye Wolf.

Kilndan, Is this the first time using the mower?

No this is not the first time. I have had other people use it as well with the tractor, who are familiar with tractors and it’s always been a major struggle to get the collar on. When I pushed it on I listened for the click like I was told.

Russells’ recomendation…. THAT is an EXCELLENT idea. (with the PTO dis-engaged, of course, so no rotation of the shaft occurs.)

Thank you for the help. I kept working at it with penetrating oil over a couple of days and I was finally able to get it off. The PTO shaft and gearbox seem fine. Again thank you for the advice.
