Our daytime highs will probably average out to be "normal" +/- couple degrees F for May. Deceptive. Bit over a week ago we had a few day unusually warm days (high mid to upper 80s) with S breeze. Then the winds veered onshore. Cold Canadian air blowing over the cold (upper 30sF) surface of L. Superior. 60s, then 50's and now 40s. One normal day (60s). Gale force winds today. Huge rollers and waves.

Should be use to these rapid fluctuations in temp. But the swings are more frequent and larger in magnitude over the past couple years. Nothing regarding the weather is "normal" anymore. Shouldn't complain too much. No tornadoes, earthquakes, floods. Enough occasional rain to keep fire risks down. Wood ticks are in full attack mode. At least no mossies and flies.

I would have to disagree with you. That is probably because I may be older than you and I remember Lake Superior influencing weather in extremes since the early 1950's. I used to live in Upper Michigan in the 1970's and in Wisconsin before that. The Great Lakes have always influenced weather patterns in the Great Lakes States. Historically, there is nothing extremely unusual about the present weather patterns.

It's called spring, isn't it? Even down here in the south you don't know if you're going to be wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and flip flops or be bundled up from one day to the next in spring.

Agree that the Great Lakes influence weather and create localized variations. And Spring is a time of change. But the extreme swings seem to be more common and to greater degree. Overall trending to warmer if you look at the annual average daily temperature highs and lows relative to the past 30 years.

Surface, mid, and deep water temps have been on an upward trend for decades. One reason why ice formation most winters seem to be low to none. Also why Lake level has huge seasonal fluctuations. This Spring about 1 1/2 foot lower than normal Lake level. High evaporative loss without ice cover during winter.

Just pure speculation. Changing conditions of L. Superior is changing how it influences our local weather.

If you talk with some of the old long retired commercial fishing people the general consensus is things have changed significantly and weather is more unpredictable. Reflections of our relatively poor NOAA nearshore marine forecast. Best to observe the barometer, wind, clouds.

Lived up here in the 60's a child. Moved back in '89. Sailing a small ballasted monohull and windsurfing the Lake for over 30 years. Home is within sight of L. Superior. Attached image is just one view from late yesterday after the winds had dropped. As a gardener, sailor, and windsurfer I have kept logs. Total number of extreme days (dead calm or near to gale force) winds have increased. Temperature extremes have increased with a slight overall warming trend. The good is we are now officially ag zone 5 with our milder winters. I have some zone 5 perennials in the ground that are more than 20 y/o.

As a skier and now snowboarder I complain too much about our freaky weather. Like how this season ended. Wednesday was a primo cool for early March conditions. Thursday we had heavy rains. 2nd time this happened this season. Friday ski area closed for the season. The 100 day season are long in the past. Just another schizo weather event.

What is this "wind" y'all speak of.

As our summer heat moves in the wind tends to promptly move out. It'll be 110 before we know it and wont be a dang breeze in site.

You'll look up at the tallest of trees and the tips wont even budge an inch.

It also seems like we don't get light rains anymore. Only gully washers.

Not too much longer and the gubment will have full control of the weather.......

You can take all of our winds from the southwest. I’m completely sick of the spring winds this year.
