I am looking for a touch of advice about how best to extend the life of the clutch in my L2501. I feel very comfortable operating a stick, I’m just wondering if there are any obvious things to avoid that are unique to clutching a tractor versus a truck. Also, does anyone have any idea what the cost is of a clutch replacement in my L2501 when that time inevitably comes? Hopefully many many many hours away. Thanks in advance.

I only use the clutch on my L2501 to start the tractor and to engage the rear PTO. I can’t imagine the clutch will wear out prematurely or anytime soon. However, I’m running an HST...

My neighbor is on his original clutch on a Kubota tractor that was purchased new in 1989.

As long as you don't ride the clutch, they last for several thousand hours. The clutch pedal usually has a holder to lock it down and released so the clutch doesn't weld to the flywheel. This is for long term storage in harsh conditions.

I have watched several people misuse the clutch by slipping it. This often occurs when trying to go slower then the gearing of the tractor will allow or when try to work the bucket into a pile of dirt. Often the operator is to lazy to downshift to the low range.

The gear tractor is good for many jobs but I have found the HST to be much easier for a general purpose machine.

Thank you guys for the replies. I have figured out already that for just about everything I’m asking my tractor to do that low 3 or low 4 seems to be the order of the day. Also, I only clutch when I’m about to break traction or shuttling in reverse. This makes me feel better that I should expect well over 1000 hours from this clutch. Thanks again.

No shifting gears when moving like in a big truck. Select the gear you want and start in that gear. Want a different gear, stop, select that gear and restart moving.
