ratings on threads?

This is just out of curiosity. I noticed that some of the threads have a five star rating and some don't. Was just curious how they get there ratings

At the top of each page of posts, in the black banner immediately above the top-most post of the thread there is a menu: at the left end, "View First Unread"; then (aligned right) "Thread Tools"; "Search this Thread"; "Rate Thread"; and "Display Modes".

Click on 'Rate Thread' and a drop-down will be presented, with choices from 5 stars (Excellent) to 1 star (Terrible)

I get so caught up in the really good threads that I almost never remember to 'vote' -- shame on me! Although this forum doesn't reward contributors with points, I like to try to 'up' you gurus who contribute such a wealth of information and wisdom.
