I have the engine ready to pull for rebuild, but am not sure whether to separate the front frame with axle attached or separate the axle from the frame at the center pivot point. That would save removing the front drive shaft and the steering linkage that doesn't want to separate at the ball joint.

Thanks,

Never pulled one of those but,,, when in doubt, Ijust start takeing it apart in my mind one way untill I run to a problem. Then I go back and try another way, Then I decide which will be the easiest,,, uh less harder.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. You apparently work the same way I do. I finally got the steering arm separated and am in the process of freeing up the drive shaft spline which is the only thing, other than the crankshaft to transmission connection, holding front and back together. Penetrating oil, vibration from air hammer/chisel, and next will be heat.

Well a second try with the air-hammer and a different tip and the front u-joint came off the drive shaft. The engine still wouldn't slide far enough forward to lift .The rear plate was hitting the angled portion of the loader mounting framework, so I unbolted and lowered the loader frame pivoting on the rear bolts. Finally the engine was free.

Since "real men" don't need instructions and I hadn't ordered a manual yet, I jumped into the engine removal not realizing I had to split the tractor. I started by hooking the hoist up to the engine and trying to just slide it forward then lift it out. IT doesn't work, things are in the way, so I ended up dropping the loader mount then moving the engine forward while still attached to the front end. Then I blocked the front end and unbolted the engine. It's much easier maneuver and align the engine by itself during removal and especially for reassembly.
