A new guy needing some help, I have read and understand that PTO needs to run at 540 rpm. But what engine rpm does that equal? At 540 my tractor is barely idling, I will be pulling a 48" rotary cutter on a BX25D, it feels like the engine should be at 2000 to 2500 rpm while working is this correct?

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks

If you look at the tach gage on the dash there should be a indicator telling you that your at the 540 rpm. Its usually a bold yellow line and may even say 540rpm.

You are correct the PTO needs to run at 540 RPM, not the engine. My old L175 has a little white dot to indicate where the correct engine RPM is to get the correct PTO RPM.

It is probably spelled out in your Operator's Manual as well.
