It's been 20 years since I've had a Kubota and mower and I had a devil of a time getting my PTO hooked up today. I have a Landpride mower with a PTO that has the spring with two little balls in it. The mower side locked in well but on the tractor I could never get it to slide completely in. I ultimately separated both ends and smacked the end to get it to seat. I had not seen this type before and wondered if I should just back to the spring and button type.

Also the boot on the guard has slid back - anything to do with this?

You probably need to clean the tractor output shaft well using a brass or steel brush then lubricate it. Get it pretty clean and remove all the dust you created before you grease it. Then try to keep it clean by putting a cover on it when it is disconnected. The dealer can sell you an inexpensive plastic cover.

Then also clean the inside of the PTO shaft then lubricate it also.

I have never seen a coupler like you show.

The plastic safety shield should have some mechanism to connect to the PTO shaft. There is probably a plastic bearing in a slot at the end of the shaft that will hold it in place when you figure out how it is supposed to attach. There are too many different ways of attachment to guess which one you have.

One I have has some screw heads that rotate oddly, another has some levers that pop up. Neither are easy to remove unless you really understand how they work.

While you’re cleaning it up, make sure the retaining balls retract freely when the collar is pulled back. If it hasn’t been cleaned or lubricated in a long time, sometimes they’ll get stuck and won’t retract freely even with the collar pulled back.

I have one PTO shaft like that. It works, but I hate it. You have to pull the collar back while lining up the yoke to the tractor PTO and pushing the shaft forward onto the PTO. Of course you’re in a confined space doing that with the guard on the shaft all in your way from one direction and the guard on the tractor all in your way from the other direction. If that shaft didn’t have a clutch built into it, I’d probably change it out. YMMV.

As mentioned above a clean PTO is your friend. As we get older a PTO Quick-Connect may be something to consider. Just note you'd have to shorten your PTO.
