have a b2301 with a 60" mid mount deck, with the pto engaged and the deck in the up position it runs and sounds as it should, as soon as I lower the deck ,again with the pto on, I get a very bad noise as I move forward and start mowing the noise stops. I took the belt loose and engaged the pto and I get the noise when I lower the deck as before, I raise the deck the noise stops. So I replaced all the bearings and seals in the gearbox I still have the noise as before.
Thinking driveshaft ? A ideas? I cant find any play in the driveshaft.
Thanks

What PTO speed are you running when you lower the deck? You should lower the deck with the PTO running at a low speed then bring it up to the rated speed (540rpm ?). Also try adjusting your PTO speed. I use a lot of equipment that is rated at 540rpm but many are run at anything from 360rpm upwards. Often it is a case of "feeling" and "listening" to the machine to find the sweet spot.

take the pto shaft off of the tractor. You can leave it on the deck. Turn pto on. Noise still there?

While you're taking the shaft off of the tractor, see if it slides easily back & forth. It should. If not, there could be the source of your noise.

Have you checked the gearbox fluid level and condition? Does it smell burnt? Any leakage in/around the gearbox?

No noise with shaft off.
This would suggest that is where the problem is. Check your PTO shaft isn’t bent, the universal joints at each end are greased and not starting to fail and also it’s the right length.

Also check the PTO spline on the tractor as I have seen these bent before.

Can you try another PTO shaft?

Stop running the deck. I would put money on that the u-joints are out of phase, when the deck up is up, the joints are straight so the out of phase joints aren’t a problem, and when the deck is down the joints are angled more so out of phase is a problem. Don’t run the deck like this, the out of phase joints will cause all sorts of wear and tear. Fix immediately.

Thinking of trying to find someone with the same type of PTo shaft, not sure they are all the same, but don’t think so, calling a dealer tomorrow to see if they have one could use.

I get noise from mine to. What I do is pull the shaft apart and apply a good deal of grease to the splines on the shaft. . I also make sure that the u-joints are in phase when putting the shafts back together. Grease the u-joints [don't over grease them}

What I've done to simplifiy putting the shafts back together in phase was to take a angle grinder and put a small notch on the female pipe end of the shaft and a small notch on the male ends yoke. Makes linning up the splines way easier.

I'd bet even money u joints are out of phase. I have an older RCK60-24B mower deck with the better of 2300 hours on it. When I installed it on the tractor (B2410) this spring I slid on the F/M side of the drive shaft onto the receiving spline. Now we all know there is only ONE way the spline and receiver can connect.... right? Well long story short with mine being a little worn it turns out I was off one tooth on the spline. This resulted in noise like you never heard before. Like yours! I reset the spline and now all is well in Maryland.

Hope this helps....

Yes, they were out of phase, running great now, thanks.
Picked this tractor up a few months ago, with no
manual, just put the deck on a week ago and had this noise, fine now, and ordered a on now.
Thanks

Are the u-joints phased correctly?

The yokes on the ends of the drive shaft should be aligned parallel to each other, or the shaft will vibrate pretty badly if at an angle.

Perhaps the shaft was taken apart and was put back together a spline or two off.

good to hear it’s fixed, hopefully you didn’t run it too much.

FYI, this sometimes happens with the front axel too, causes all kinds of bad things to happen.
