hit a stump with bushhog. Ever since the pto slips when put under load. I believe the clutch is damaged. I debating whether to try repairs myself or take to a dealer. The tractor will have to be broke down to get to the clutch. I repair most of my own equipment but never to this extent. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. Any info would be appreciated. Self repairs estimated $500 +/-, Dealer repairs estimated $2300-$2500

The L3710 GST was available with 2 pto types. Do you know which it has?

One has a simple one-way coupling that goes in with a clunk, and overruns if a mower is spinning faster than pto shaft. The other type is independent with a hydraulic clutch that engages smoothly even with engine above idle.

With engine OFF but pto engaged can you make it slip by hand?

With engine running, when the pto slips "under load", does it make any noises?

The WSM for the Lxx10 models has near zero troubleshooting for the pto - or first-time tractor splitters. But we all started somewhere and its "not science rocket" as my son says ;)

If you do other machinery repairs and have a decent floor to work above my bet is you could find the problem, fix it and save a bundle, not to mention have a story to tell.

I believe this one is not the independant model, I normally use my clutch to engage pto. It does make a noise when it's slipping like teeth are trying to but not able to engage until I lessen the load with a cycle mower. With my 6 ft bushhog it star slipping under even a fairly light load. Would you know if I have to remove the transmission or can I leave it attached to engine when you split the tractor? I believe my trouble is in the clutch pack unit and it looks like it would not be to big a deal if I can get to it by just breaking it where the transmission connects to the rear end. Any info will be appreciated for sure and thanks for the encouragement.

Sounds like you have the over-running one-way pto clutch. Splitting the machine at the trans/rear end will expose the parts, but lining things up for going back together is said to be tricky (I myself have not done this exact model). This thread is relevant, suggesting splitting at the engine and working your way back. Wolfman is a reliable guide.

There's some related reading here that may have some useful bits. (L48 uses several of the same parts as Lxx10 ) With your GST the clutch may be ok, but the front driveshaft seals may be worth updating to the new design. Post #50 talks about those seals and about reassembling a split at the mid case.

For many jobs, the WSM shows more dismantling than may be needed. The pictures are better with everything out of the way, but doing less disassembly sometimes works well enough. Here's a copy from Lxx10 WSM page 3-S27.

OTT is a good place for questions, when into it. Dick B
