I had my diesel mower running with water in the radiator. The mower would shut off a lot while running so I turned the throttle higher. The mower then overheated and steam came up from the radiator. I noticed that the positive battery cable had a hard plastic corrugated cover and the mower got so hot that the metal frame melted through the plastic. I realized there was no coolant so I refilled it with green 50/50 ethylene glycol. I replaced the power cable but it didn't have a hard plastic cover. It only had the rubber outer coating. I ran the mower again and it started sparking under the hood. The positive power cable was touching the muffler and melted through the rubber. What can I do to make sure the cable doesn't melt again?

A picture of the area would help us answer your question ;) You can get little after market terminal covers for battery cables at your local auto parts. Usually the slide over the end of the cable, and can be zip tied to the cable to keep them secured.

Can you loosen the cable, turn the terminal so that the cable doesn't contact the exhaust? Also a piece of coolant line split down one side to sleeve the cable can help as well. It will at least give you a spot to attach some zip ties to the cable to secure it away from the exhaust.

If you can have one made longer and reroute ot and secure it with tie straps and maybe a loose hose clamp as tie straps sometimes fail.
