I got a gearbox and a PTO shaft from a fertilizer spreader at a scrap yard last week for next to nothing. My thinking was I could use the drive shaft at some point in the future when I got around to building a generator but the shaft was actually twisted.

The gearbox is good and I have no idea how someone twisted the shaft. I can buy shaft tubing and have a drive line shop weld up the u-joint ends and I'll still come out cheaper than a whole shaft.

What about the gearbox? Can you guys think of a use for it?

I don't know what ratio would be needed, but I've often wondered how hard it would be to make a stump grinder. I have a friend that is a retired machinist, and he has a box full of old 6" horizontal mill cutters.
