Last week was a first for me. We had a snow storm, and how the counties handle side roads in a snow storm is pretty much non existent.

The exception is that they will spread some salt on to of 6" of snow.

I ran up the street with the tractor to clear all the slush off the hill so my wife could get home.

A car went by and then I followed the car up the road.

Just as I started up the hill with the tractor, a deer came blasting out of the ditch. I missed the deer by a couple inches with the bucket 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

This little girl has been bedding down about 20ft from where we park in our driveway since yesterday.

I'm figuring she slipped and sprained her right front leg crossing the neighbors ditch the other day.

I could see where one fell down the bank.

She still moves around pretty good on three legs. And was pretty sassy this morning when my dog and I disturbed her when we went for a walk before work.

I'll stop tonight and get her some corn and sweet feed 🥰🥰🥰 View attachment 169311
I could see bone sticking out so the best thing we could do was to stop the suffering. We have’s buck that wasn’t putting any weight on one of his front legs a couple weeks back. Saw him again last night and he was limping but putting weight on it. We’re doing about 200 lbs of feed a week to help them out. They have things well compacted so the feed stays on top.

Ya, my only collision with a deer happened that way. It was about 10AM. I saw her standing on the bank, just before she bolted. Hit the pickup bed, right in front of the rear wheel. I think she was moving faster than I was.

Our pastor at church had something similar happen to him. After saving for years, he went out and bought a low mileage used crew cab pickup. One week after purchasing the truck, a deer came flying out of the woods and ran into the side of his truck right behind the rear door.

We had one a couple years back that was hit by a car in the tail end. Really favoring his left leg.

I saw him this summer. He was hanging out about 10 ft out in the back yard from the vehicles. He doesn't run. Just sauntered slowly off. Then hung out by one of the brush piles about 100 ft away.

My buddy was seeing him in the mornings hanging out in another friend's yard down the street pretty regularly.

The deer have about 150 acres on our side of the road where they don't get bothered, plus the cattle pasture across the road from us. Lot of acorns and plenty of scrub to hide in.

I'll put fresh batteries and relocate my game camera to watch the area I put the food out on to keep an eye on the little girl.

Between the neighbors and I we have around 90 acres of contiguous woods, half is heavy underbrush and the rest a mature canopy. Lots of beech nuts, acorns, walnuts and other stuff to eat plus good cover to bed down in. I’ve been back cutting wood and when I stop and look up two or three are enjoying the show. Never run off, just walk away. In the spring the moms will snort to let me know I’m intruding and hold their ground. I need to get some trail cams out there too.
