Good evening guys. New here, just joined so not really had a chance to brows through all the topics here. I have just purchased my 1st Kubota. It's a 1984 B7100 HST in pretty good condition id say. ive just changed all the oils just for peace of mind. I'm just wondering about the transmission as when its under a little load like going up a slight gradient it starts to whine as its working a little harder so I'm just wondering if I should be concerned or if there is something I should be looking at? Ive not had it working hard or anything, this was just something I thought maybe an oil an filter change might help but I don't really know if there is any improvement to be honest. I understand the tone of things will change a little under load and change the harder it's worked but not sure if they are all like that or not. Any help would be mucho appreciated as I want to fully restore this am some little toy.

HST whine is normal and it increases under load. Different models exhibit more or less whine.

Excessive whine is not normal. Excessive is in the ear of the listener.

You mention changing all the oils. What oils did you use?

I have read synthetic oil by Kubota (SUDT2 vs UDT2) can be quieter standard oil. Did you use Kubota branded oil, or something else?

Yeah, I'm just trying to determine if it is. an excessive whine
Nice find, wonderful tractor. Hopefully, you’re only needing to adjust the whine of an HST over a geared tractor. Having only driven dozens of gear shift tractors growing up, the HST for me is a huge improvement.

IT wasn't Kubota branded no. It was a good quality alternative. The filters that I replaced were Kubota genuine filters, I can't be sure of the oil that I drained. It didn't look terrible to be honest, and nothing bad came out both the strainer plugs.

Thanks mate. Ive been around various plant, tractors, forklifts all my days. I guess geared and vario transmissions both have there place. Planning on running grass cutting equipment off this so vario transmission for me

The original oil in that tractor was UDT. Its unlikely your good quality alternative is any different whine wise.

SUDT2 is a little lower viscosity and if you want to place a $150 wager you can drain and refill with that. My guess is your gamble goes bust.

My 79' B7100 HSE has a whine. It's noticeable under load but I wouldn't consider excessive. Maybe a little more than a modern tractor.

Did you clean the two pickup screens when you did the fluid change? One on each side of transmission.

Using high/low range appropriately for hills and workload helps too.

And herein lies the problem. What point of reference do you have for HST noise and what's normal? Unless you know what normal sounds like you're not going to know if you have excessive HST noise. If you do have excessive noise what would you do about it?

It's not like you can stop by your local Kubota dealer and take a new B7100 for a spin to get a point of reference. Perhaps there's a tractor club, or better yet a Kubota tractor club in your area where you might be able to meet other B7100 or similar owners. Of course, another option is just to do a complete service (which you seem to be doing) and enjoy the tractor and address confirmed issues if/when they show up.

Mines also has a noticeable while under load. it might not be excessive in these little Kubota's but it does to me sound a little excessive but it also might be normal for these. Ive only had it a couple days and really only had it running 10-15 minutes tops. Yes both screens were clean when I dried the oil. Not had it on anything steep but yes id switch to low if it was needed

I thought mine was kinda loud when I got it. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I've never seen another one to compare it, and the original owner has dementia. I got mine for free b/c it hadn't run in 20+ yrs so I never heard it earlier in its life.

But it has never gotten any worse over the years, and I do my maintenance, so I don't worry about it.

My reference is being around various working plant of all sizes, diggers, tractors, dumpers, shovels, crushers and so on. All. the vario transmission stuff here is much newer and much quieter which I would expect. And the little Kubota sounds much louder so that was my thinking of asking like minded good people like yourself if there are anything else I should be talking a look at other than a good service. Im hoping nothing is wrong and it's just a 41 year old transmission whine that is normal sounding so then I can move on and enjoy the tractor like you have also suggested. Appreciate the input.

Other than cutting open the filters that you swapped out to look for excessive signs of wear, there isn't much to be done other than what you're doing. A lot of these tractors are seemingly bullet proof if basic maintenance has been done somewhat regularly. Enjoy the tractor. (y)

That's what I'm wanting to hear so I can just accept the fact that its a little noisy in other little b7100's

Nothing in either the engine or transmission filters, both pretty clean. I cut them open on the band saw. Hopefully it's just a normal 41 year old whine.

I wasn't trying to be a smart arse with my comment about a point of reference. It's just the reality that we're comparative creatures and even our mood affects our perception of sound and noise. dB meters are used to get away from perception and to provide real data since humans are famously unreliable when it comes to such things.

Sounds like you have plenty of experience with machinery so this tractor is in good hands. (y)

No offence taken by any comment buddy., never thought you were trying to be smart at all, appreciate your input.
