I purchased a replacement center steering link for my antique L245. The original is frozen and I want to extend the front end for better stability on steep slopes. There are no zerk fittings on either end, nor on the replacement tie rod end for the drag link. While I'm aware of lubeless fittings, I'm not a fan of them. Are new Kubota tie rod ends lubeless, (if so, why the rubber boots) or should I drill and tap them for zerks? Doing so could introduce metal shavings which would certainly be problematic. Suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Snark
I purchased new tie rods for my L35 and they do not have zerk fittings either.
The rubber boots are likely to protect from moisture and retain the OEM lube.
For me that's ok as I'm not using this machine to build highways but I get your point.
Inside the tie rod itself is a bushing that the ball-end of the swivel swivels in.
If you drill, you'd need to go thru the bottom of the tie rod to avoid messing up the bushing/ball.
Possibly you can use a strong shop vac while you're drilling.
The bottom of the tie rod was thin metal and was pressed in on one end but not on the other.
I experimented with the old ones I had as they were very damaged anyway.
I don't think it's worth installing zerks, but your case may be different.

Thanks for the input and the pix. I know modern plastics can be used in lieu of lubricants and that's likely what is in the tie rod ends. Considering the lack of lubrication that typically occurs I can understand the tendency to provide materials that reduce maintenance, especially in areas that might well get neglected. You're correct, these aren't heavy duty construction or major field farming units. I'm just an old school guy - if it slides, rolls or rubs - lube it.

Leave them original. You are likely to do more harm than good if you start chopping on them.
