When I was just starting out, I bought my first Toyota Landcruiser, and used up pretty much all my ready cash to do it.
The battery died almost immediately, but it came with a hand crank, so for the first couple of weeks I started it by hand.
Kickbacks were brutal, but on the whole it started very easily.
Sometimes, even after I got a new battery, I would bet people I could hand crank it, and pick up a little beer money. :)

All early Landcruisers came with a fitting like this on the end of the crank.

Very interesting lesson. I can't imagine that 'glow plug' being very effective, but fired right off.

Thanks for posting that video.
