Greeting everyone! New owner here from NC. Not sure if this is the proper sub-forum to post an intro thread, but I wanted to say 'hello' to everyone as a new-to-me BX23S owner. Whenever I purchase a new vehicle, I always join the appropriate car forum, so I figured I would register here as a lot of you seasoned vets are a wealth of information for us newbies.

I got it over the weekend as a Father's Day present to me, but it was really just a matter of good timing. I had been searching for a used sub-compact for a while and always seemed to just miss it. I found this 2020 gem with only 29.4 hours on it!

BX23S.jpg

Of all places, it was at a semi-local car dealership. I looked at it this last Saturday and asked the manager about the story on it. He told me that back in 2020 an older gentleman apparently won a million dollars on a scratch-off and purchased this with various other "toys" including a mini excavator and a boat that had sadly never seen any water (pictured in the background on a trailer). He passed away and his son inherited everything. He came to the dealership with all of these things and said he needed a new truck and a car for his wife, so he wanted to make a trade.

I'm on a little under 2 acres and just needed something for some light work like debris removal, stumps, grading, etc. There is a lot of natural area and it seems like every year at least one or two huge oak trees fall. I grew tired of hiring out for tree removal which always seemed to cost at least a couple thousand. Also, we recent built a 3-car garage addition and I'm not a fan of the loose stone, so I plan on digging out that area in the future and replacing it with something else. Do I really need something like this? Absolutely not! But, what's the fun in that?

It is extremely clean, but like all used vehicle purchases, I plan on tackling some immediate preventative maintenance items. Clearly, it did not get a lot of use in its past and not at the 50-hour mark yet, but I figured I would go ahead and do those service interval items. As far as future plans, I'll likely get some bucket teeth and/or forks and a 3-point hitch to help out with moving my (empty) tandem axle trailer around when necessary. Probably pick up some log tongs to help move around the trees that get taken out. Other than that, possibly a box blade/scraper in the future when it comes time to tackle the loose stone project. In the immediate future, I'll use it to help clear out my old shed and lay the proper foundation for a larger shed. I figure something in the 10'x20' or 12'x24' range should be sufficient for it to live when not in use.

Anyway, thanks for having me and happy to be a part of the orange community!

Welcome!

Forks are a great addition for most anyone. Whether moving logs or washing machines or lumber, after having a set I’m not sure how anyone functions without them.

Agreed. I had them on my L and don't have them yet for my BX and I miss the heck out of them. I'm cheap though and I'm just waiting on a good deal to pop up on a used set.

Hi! New BX owner, but a owned a compact NH for almost 25 years.

Wheels on the BX are not reversible so I had the dealer install 2" spacers. People claim it makes a difference.

Hydraulic cooling fan is a bit exposed. On trail use concerns. BXepanded skid shield. Only issue for some might be if running a mid mount mower. But, it looks like about a minute or two effort to remove. Most difficult aspect is the minimal clearance under the BX to slide your body. Use to use a slide board while working under the NH. Bit too tight under the BX.

Needed a trailer ball mount to move trailers around. First unit purchased was the Heavy Hitch (Rochester, MN company) model. But I couldn't remove the bolts on the hitch plate. I've since after years of busting knuckles and thinking evil words invested in a quality impact wrench. Returned the Heavy Hitch and purchased the BXpanded quick on and off receiver. Better choice in the long run for my needs. Also, a bit less $$s. You might need a receiver style vs. direct ball mount. Found I needed a 4" rise.

Changed out those 3 pt toggle lower arm stabilizers for some sliders. Company out of S.D. (eparts).

Cruising the used implement area at the dealer discovered couple "treasures". Lightly used QH compatible box blade at a fair price. Got too excited. Hind sight. Land plane would have been maybe a better choice for driveway maintenance. I sort of understand why some call land planes the dummy's box blade.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I'm not sure if I'm going to run a mid mount mower or not unless I can find a steal on a used one, but even then, it might be somewhat of a gamble. I like to do all the maintenance on my vehicles and I have a 2-post car lift in one of the bays of my garage addition. I'm guessing that might ease the installation/removal process of a mower in the future if I go that route.

As far as the forks are concerned, are you guys running the clamp-on style pallet forks, the pallet forks with the stabilizer between them, or the style that have more than two forks? I came across the 42" clamp on debris fork from Southglide and it seems like they would do well, but I didn't know if you all had some better recommendations.

I saw the heavy hitch and the bxpanded option. Thanks for the feedback!

I'll check out the stabilizer replacements you mentioned, too.

Replacing the loose gravel with something more substantial is likely a "next year project," but I guess we'll see how productive I am with this new machine. I mean, anything can be better than a shovel and wheelbarrow right?

~80 tons of blue rock gravel delivered over the past couple weeks. Driver did a good job spreading it along the driveway. He started from the top working downhill. Was able to distribute just a light top coating on the driveway. My normal every 7-10 year "lets throw $$$$s into the ground". Ton of gravel only gives you ~2" over a 100 sq feet. Last 20 tons in a pile for me to fill in the dips and rolls that have developed over the past few winters from my brain dead moments removing snow. And to ease the transitions from steep to slight inclines. Where I do the most damage to the driveway during winter snow removal.

Used the loader bucket and dirt bucket to drop piles in those areas. Then pull gravel using the box blade from the pile along with a bucket load to level the areas. Did use a wheelbarrow and shovel in the area within a few feet of the pile .

Use to be work. Now that I'm retired. Have the time. Now sort of fun.

Trails have a heavy growth of ferns, grass covering any sun exposed sections. Wood tick heaven. Need a brush hog to deal with the poplar saplings that are popping up and cut the ferns down. No walk zone right now. Unless you goop up with picaridin.

Bit of an endless list of implements on the "want list". Good thing the BX is too small to handle a stump grinder. Good thing my garage is too small.

Fork style… Personally, I prefer SSQA frame with width adjustable forks (replaces bucket). With SSQA it’s extremely fast and easy to swap bucket to forks and back. Maybe you could clamp a set on the bucket faster, but I kind of doubt it. Obviously that’s not an option if you have a pin on bucket. Looks like yours is SSQA.

I picked up a set from Unlimited Fabrications (www.rootgrapple.com) in Denton, NC. Their lightest set at 2800lb capacity is plenty for my little CUT, priced right at $748.00 (I think it was a bit less when I bought them a few years ago), and due to their location I was able to order a set at 10:00 one morning and pick them up same day on my lunch break.

Welcome to the party!

Nice ride you have there. Looks super clean.

My forks are my most used front implement.

Not that I don't use the bucket or the grapple, but IMHO fork are the best bang for your buck.

Mine are the HLA light duty ones.

Just one example of "Man I'm sure glad I have these forks"

(Black Friday....couldn't pass it up deal at TSC 🍻 )

I forgot to add that your gonna love that backhoe!!!!!! That is "far and away" my favorite implement. 🍻 🍻 🍻

Perfect. This is exactly the reason why I joined up for this valuable information from you more experienced people!

It looks like some quick attach pallet forks are in my near future. While pricier, they seem definitely better than the bolt-on style forks.

And yes, I am really going to enjoy the backhoe! When I was discussing this venture with my better half, I mentioned that the backhoe would be a "nice to have" feature, but not a necessity. She disagreed and said that I should put the backhoe option in the "must-have" column. This sent me towards the 23S as opposed to the 2380. Digging in this NC dirt/clay is not so much fun.

My folks are retired out in Montgomery Co. I'll check out the previously-mentioned outfit in Denton since it's not terribly far from them.

Welcome to the Orange,, I guess everything has been covered already by this bunch of tractor nerds! Remember the only dumb question, is the one you dont ask! Though I will bestow upon you some wisdom, others may not. Never and I mean NEVER, let the better half on the orang beast, not that she couldnt do it, but for your own safety and piece of mind. You may find out you dont get all the seat time you want, and then well,,,, like so many of us in here you wind up with a stable mate for the BX,,, and that, may not be a bad thing, now that I think about it .

Welcome to the forum. Nice find. If you need a good set of forks, here is a link to redline systems out of Minnesota. Skid steer forks are to heavy. These are perfect for the BX line of tractors. Enjoy the new toy.
