My hunt for third tractor continues to leave me flat. I drove 600 miles round trip yesterday to see a 300 Hour l4760 Grand with cab HST asking $38,500

its right at 300 hours. First thought it is exactly what id want in this tractor. But it has had severe neglect I doubt its ever been greased anywhere, trans fluid and filters were never replaced filters have factory paint on them air filter completely plugged it had a massive coolant leak at the lower radiator hose seller topped it off before I showed up. Yeah he did an oil drain and refill and an oil filter before I showed up. It lost a gallon of coolant before I got there, Its a back yard licensed dealer. not to Knock these type shops I started out small and grew. But I think this was a repo or the last owner probably overheated it or something and had someone look at it and told them you have not maintained this tractor and they traded it. Oh and a big gouge in the right front tire. There are no records.

It most likely was not beaten to death just full on neglected. The loader buckets like new but been on there most likely since new.

What are your thoughts on it. If im going to Buy it it is something I should move on. I left upset this LIKE NEW tractor was not like new was not even inspected by a low level tractor dealer. Its price is just OK given what I know. Now today I'm sure hes put an air filter in it fixed the coolant leak and greased it because in the two minutes there I did a full inspection on it for him for FREE.

Run walk and think more about buying it. A new grand is not in my financial picture for this tractor which will probably only see 300 to 400 hours use. There have been no tractors of interest in my area and ive been at this for months.

Your location says Big Island but I seem to remember that you were thinking of shipping to Hawaii. I would imagine a very small market of good used tractors in Hawaii, so was this last one in Hawaii or on the mainland?

I don't know why more people on this forum don't reach out to informed members to take a look at a tractor that many states away and get eyes and hands on something. It would increase the chance of success and take some of the stress out of buying used.

I was going to ask one of our moderators if he'd mind looking at a used excavator near him, but then I realized that I wasn't really in a position to spend that much so didn't want to waste his time. If I had the money ready to go I'd have no problem reaching out to a number of members here and request an inspection.

This tractors for here in the continental US border of Washington and Oregon so its local. Im looking for 45 to 60 HP with a cab. It’s complicated by the fact that I spend less and less time here each year. I buy a new tractor and things change two years from now I may not even be here in the mainland any more. Spending $70 to $90K on a new tractor just isnt Justifiable this tractor will not see a lot of use. .

hmmm.... I would tend to lean towards passing on that one.

I equate 300hrs to about 15,000 miles on a car.
- I think I can get over the no grease issue.
- I have more of a trouble with no engine oil change. That bothers me a bit more.
- The low fluid level / leak bothers me most. Combined with plugged air filter (dirty rad as well??) I would be concerned with over heating added to the mix.

final thought in my area seems a huge percentage of used tractors on the market seem to be because they are lemons or something wrong with them. Not saying this is your case but a big concern in my area. Lots of guys trying to pass their problems onto the next guy and with no service records in a back yard mechanics shop this would be my biggest worry. So I would pass as don't want to get stuck with possibly someone else problems.

At min. I would only buy it after I had a reputable dealer give it a real good look over.

I think for situations like this take advice from David Puddy 🎱 .

Wide cracks aside..

It’s hard to say what the actual wear is…none of us on hear know really I think from a longevity point of view. It seems reasonable it’s a wild card though. personally I think you have to think about Risk / Reward. Is the price so good you would roll dice on it?

For me to buy used at that price, my assumption is prove of history / condition…should be some documentation(sure that can forged, but when you look does the log book match what you see? If serviced at a dealer there are records…if original oil filter still there that’s a really big data point. (My assumption buying used is it comes with ‘mailbox warranty’…inspect and buyer beware)

to me if the seller did not tell you it was neglected and price appropriately and you assessed that it is in bad condition, I think go with you gut.

wear items are not warrant items even if there was a transferable warranty.

if you are looking for a limited use machine and runs when you need it, go with your gut IMO.

quick search on tractor house indicates that’s not hard to beat that price if willing to shop/travel, and I would not consider them fire sale pricers.

consider your drive and fuel to be an ounce of prevention and continue the search IMO.

Based on your description I would definitely pass. Buying a tool is only good if it works when you need it. Your description indicates a lot of neglect, which translates to time and money to get it corrected.

You'll have to do your due diligence since some adds on Craigslist are scams, but there appear to be some decent options in your neck of the woods.

Nice L4240 in Spokane.

Or a nice Kioti in Spokane.

And a nice looking L4060 in Silverdale, WA

I also would pass on this one.
Besides the 300 hours, how many years old is it.

I forgot to put that its a 2023 so its not old.

I think really I was venting when I posted. I was mad to say the least. Theres no inspection that would satisfy my concerns that it’s has or hasnt been ran hot or at least low on coolant and how many times. Fact is it was a big coolant leak. beyond that Im an auto shop owner and a high skill level tech while theres things I dont know about tractor hydraulics I know mechanical better than most. So my decision to walk away from what was based on 45 years of mechanical knowledge. I should just be happy this dealer hadn’t spent 5 minutes inspecting this thing before listing it had they done so they would have addressed the coolant leak and replaced the air filter which was another story this thing was the kind of neglect that just screams bad owner. I probably would have bought it. It may be just fine but I live in a world where repeated overheating of an engine is the foundation for hard failures either now or soon. But I asked the right questions before I drove 300 miles to see something and this guy should have just told me this is the wrong tractor for someone like you. Instead he wasted a full day of mine.

He even made things worse I’ll probably give up the hunt soon and just order a new Kubota and quite possibly a Grand similar to this one. Which good or bad I walked up to this tractor and thought this is exactly what I want. I use a loader a lot and this things got a massive loader and bucket. The other features well im old enough to live out my days with what I want even if I cant mentally wrap my head around the costs right now.

Thanks for participating in my rant. It’s life I'm better tonight.

In my life time I have bought more than my share of repo equipment from farm tractors, semi's ,cars, pickups and list goes on. The key to things like this tractor is you have to buy them {wholesale}. You have to buy it so if it ends up needing a motor you are still ok and you have to able to do the work your self. I have bought many pieces of equipment threw my banker or one of his banker friends. The problem now days there are too many equipment jockeys and auctions out there for the repo folks to move there equipment threw. This tractor is not priced close to a wholesale price and probably at the least will need a head and overhaul. I have only ever had one semi tractor that I kind of got burned on. I didn't want it but the banker really wanted me to handle it for him. He had lent way too much money on this truck and there was no happy outcome for him. In the end I had to do a out of frame overhaul as the crank needed turned. It took more time and money than I would have liked. In the end it made a good truck.

Priced way too high for what you found plus seller's not reliable with what he lead you to expect. walk on this one.
