New member here, I have a BX24 (2007 I believe) that has been a great little rig for the last 4 years. Recently, when I start it, I hear a squealing noise under the hood and the tachometer will only indicate 600 rpm regardless of engine speed. Occasionally, it will "catch" and start reading correctly and the noise goes away. I have not been able to find how the tachometer gets its signal- cable or drive unit. etc.

Can anyone here help me with this problem?
Thanks

Check the belt tension.
Sounds like it's slipping and catches on sometimes, resulting in normal operation.
Good Luck!
Right, I'm pretty sure that model uses the AC signal off the alternator to run the tach.

I finally got a chance to get out to the shop and take a look at the tractor- you folks nailed it! the belt was quite loose, no wonder it wasn't working. I'm a diesel newbie, I would have never thought the alternator is the where the tachometer gets it signal from.

Thanks for the help!!
