Need a little help swapping brushhog gearbox

Need to take off the PTO from the gearbox so I can put it on my new gearbox.

Ive been seeing a dozen different ways and I want to confirm the proper way.

Some people are saying the pin that is smooth on one end and threaded on the other can be punched to release the PTO. some people are saying to loosen the slip clutch bolts to take off the PTO.

It says it is a taper pin with a nut. I think I would leave the nut on the end of the threads to protect them and hit it with a hammer or a punch to drive it out towards the head end.

You may have misunderstood. Just loosen the nut a couple of turns and hit the nut end. Once it starts out, remove the nut and remove the pin out the smooth end side. Leaving the nut on loosely protects it while hammering.

You mis-understood the instructions.

Hit it on the threaded side and drive it out towards the non-threaded side.

Hit here but have the nut on to keep from mushrooming the end. When it moves take the nut off.

The pin needs to move this direction

gotcha, it came out easy peasy I appreciate the help.

my last question (for now) I pulled off the blades and there was some sort of seal in it that looked like it was made of string. I def need to replace it but just cant find the part

I think its item 16 and 17 that is seated in there. Ive found some seals online with that dimension but cant find part number 17. Im looking at a few websites but they arent showing the part I need.

I have no idea how to answer your questions but do know that rotary cutters are known to wind all sorts of wire and strings around that area since people are known to leave junk in fields and then mow that field at some later time.

I thought you were replacing the gear box. Isn’t that seal #16 inside the new gearbox under #17 in your third picture above?

the first two pics are from the manual and the second two are from the parts list websites.

the way I read it was that 16, 17, 20 and 21 are the parts that go outside with the castle nut (21) and washer (20) being below the blade to lock it in.

This is what I pulled out of the well, its green and feels syntethic. (maybe its just grass???) Just need to find what goes back in this

That definitely looks like a string from a round bail to me. You might be able to straighten it out or clean it up to see it better. It seems like it just is oily/greasy so maybe a rag would help clean it or some degreaser? The string may be synthetic though so don’t get too aggressive with the cleaner or it could just dissolve??? I am pretty sure there is dirt and grass involved also.

The piece with the arrow looks like this piece (that should be attached to the top of the blade carrier) in yellow to me. Is there anything on top of the carrier?
