Name that implement/accessory

A relative gave me this as a gift saying that no tractor owner should be without one. He called it a drawbar & said it was indispensable, but could not tell me for what, other than to say all the tractors on his pa's old farm had them.

Well, it's been years & I've found no use for it, except to provide spiders in the garage a support structure for their webs.
I guess with some means to keep it from rotating, you could put a ball on it & tow a trailer, but I'm not a fan of towing with the 3pt hitch.

So, what is it called, & what is it used for? Thanks.

We call them draw bars.

We place various size balls on them 1 7/8, 2", 2 5/16, and a clevis hook on ours so we can pull trailers around. The advantage is you can lower and lift the trailer with the 3pt as opposed to the draw bar that slides into the rear of most tractors.

Just be careful and don't pull and snatch to heavy a load with the clevis if you put one on it.

When I was 16 30 years ago I had a chain hooked to the clevis between a Ford 3910 and a stuck dump truck, snapped the bar in half.

So, here in NC since I was a kid if someone around farm told me to get the draw bar the pic it was I got and carried it to them.

Just thought of another way we used them forgot to pule trailers around that the tongue required a pin to attach such as tobacco trailers and similar that we hauled snapped corn in for cows.

It should not rotate when trailer with ball or pin connection is in place don't recall ours doing that.

It will rotate some with a ball attached but never had one pop off.
I welded up an A frame that bolted to my drawbar for towing and moving trailers around especially the log splitter. its nice to be able to raise or lower the hitch sometimes. I added a clevis to the top of the A frame for chaining up to logs etc.

Yep, draw bar, had one for my 8Ns. Did a bit of pulling and moving trailers but used it mostly to keep the 3pt arms stationary when the blade was off. Let it go with one of the 8Ns that did not have a blade when I sold it, good blade so kept it for my Kubota. When I first got the Kubota the delivery guy showed me the draw bar set up and that looked like a better method than putting strain on the 3pt.

I have also always called it a draw bar, but it should not be confused with a real draw bar that is parallel to the tractor and connects to the frame.
There are several pitfalls to using a bar between the lower arms, including the attached item lifting the 3 point arms, and the bar rotating. I use a device that locks the bar from rotating (hard to describe).

Well, Lil Foot - I thought a drawbar was a must have when I got my Kubota, because seemed everybody I knew had one.

Never used one before, 'cuz everything got hooked to a fixed "drawbar" on our farm tractors when I was a Lil Tyke.

After couple uses, took it off in favor of an aftermarket fixed drawbar on my BX.

Mine collects spider webs, too.....only use I've found is with a clevis/chain/strap to pull roots......

Now, one guy here made a REALLY COOL carry-all that was attached via one of those drawbars - just lift up into a pocket and go - don't remember how the top link worked - but it was cool.

Bill, I think what you have is called a 3 pt. drawbar. The steel bar that comes out from under the tractor is referred to a swinging drawbar. Used for different purposes.

If you're going to make a ballast, and you have the drawbar laying around in your way, use it in the center of the ballast and use the pins to attach it to your 3 pt.

Yep, draw bar, had one for my 8Ns.

Funny, the guy who gave it to me has an 8N, but I've only seen him use a Bush Hog on it.

I have also always called it a draw bar, but it should not be confused with a real draw bar that is parallel to the tractor and connects to the frame.

I have always used the fixed one for any pulling.
I worry about pulling with the 3pt because I have heard of the tongue of a trailer suddenly slamming upward, damaging/breaking the 3pt lift mechanism.

Guess I'll keep it around, maybe someday I'll build some sort of carryall or
counterweight with it.

There are some implements that have a clevis tongue that attaches to this draw bar (two metal straps that a pin drops through and the drawbar)
Usually they are four wheeled trailers and large drag type shredders

I use one a lot, I bolted a plate about 10" X 10" at the center then weld a short piece of 2" X2" tubing perpendicular in the center weld a couple pates on the sides of the tubing with 3/4" holes for the top hook on your quick hitch. They work great if you use a Quick Hitch you can either put a ball in the center behind the vertical 2x2 or use one of the holes in the draw bar. That way you don't have to reach in to hook up to the frame hitch and when your not using it just throw it to the side to collect spiders.
