Measuring for New PTO Drive Shaft

How do I properly measure for a new PTO drive shaft? I added Pats quick attach and it pushed my brush hog too far back for my drive shaft. Do I measure from the grove on the tractor’s PTO to the same on the cutter? Am I just measuring the shaft itself? I need to know the proper number for the length when ordering a new shaft. I hope I’m making sense. Thanks for any and all help

yes from the groove at the splines is your starting point, where the PTO collar locks. watch this video, it is very well done.
