I have an m9000 that when starting it takes a while for the oil pressure light to go out. In the cold weather it will sometimes shut itself off. Is there a check valve or something somewhere that needs fixing ?? thanks
Sure is, I had the same issue when I bought my M9 new in 2001. In the front of the engine on the bottom, in front of the oil pan, there is a casting with 2 plugs in it facing downward. Under the left plug there is a shuttle valve that controls oil flow to the engine. I had a burr on the valve spool that was hanging in the bore and causing the shuttle to move slowly, which causes the oil pressure to build slowly and causes the engine to shut down.
My dealer's mechanic came out and pulled the plug and showed me the issue, they took the tractor back to the shop and replaced the entire casting and all it's internal parts under warranty. However, I think the issue could have been addressed by just removing the shuttle valve and carefully polishing the burr away with crocus cloth.
I also switched from a heavier multi-grade oil (15-40 Rotella) to a lighter weight oil (5-40 Rotella Synthetic. Haven't had any issues since.
In the dead of Michigan winters, I will pull the manual shutdown and free crank the engine for about 5 seconds and then start using the glow plugs and normal start procedure. Always fires up just fine now. Make sure you have a good battery with sufficient charge too. I run a Group 31 with 1200 CCA.
Hope that helps. I too had that issue.
