First thing I would do is check your clutch adjustment, there ought to be a way to increase the travel in the linkage.

The F/R shifter is controlled by a cable. Here is a photo of the WSM on how to adjust it. It may just need an adjustment (or not). Good luck!

I agree checking clutch free travel. I hope your tractor isn't experiencing sync shuttle synchronizer failure similar to what I experienced on a M4900. I had to R&R synchronizer assembly on it several yrs back to the tune of $2000

Just to make sure...does the tractor have a hydraulic shuttle? If so, then read below. If not, skip this post.

The foot clutch is not used when the F-N-R shuttle lever is used. However, it can be. So it is not likely a foot clutch adjustment issue for the hydraulic shuttle.

So a few more questions for the OP:

>When the foot clutch IS used with the shuttle, is the problem the same?

>What is the specific problem with getting into gear? Grinding? Stiff lever? Or?

>Does trying to engage F act the same as R? Does pausing in N as the lever is used make any difference?

No...that is why I specifically asked, "Just to make sure...does the tractor have a hydraulic shuttle?"

Sometimes the terms used can be confusing. The next paragraph in my post points out that the hydraulic shuttle doesn't need to be clutched. That would clarify the operation and what the OP has.

For example, the specs on my tractor when purchased stated:

DRIVE TRAIN
Four Speed Fully Synchronized
8F/8R Synchro Shuttle
8F/8R Speeds Hydraulic shuttle
