We have a 2000 M6800 we bought used at 1200 hours, about 3 years ago. Its been a hard worker with no complaints. I use it for shredding (mowing) and occasional front end loading with dirt or rocks.

This spring, in a space of about 3 weeks, three of the four hydraulic cylinders on the boom and bucket began leaking. I tore them down and all seals were seriously deteriorated, even though it worked fine. I'll tear the fourth one down when I get a chance.

What I did notice, however, was the fluid was milky, not the amber-clear I am used to. I added about a gallon of universal oil since I lost quite a bit during the cylinder overhaul.

When I put it back to work again (shredding), about 3 hours into it, foamy fluid blew out of the dipstick boot. I washed everything down and put it back to work.

Today, after shredding about 3 hours, the hydraulic steering went completely out. The FEL works fine (LA1001). The hydraulic oil appears to be full but the dipstick has about 1/8" of milky stuff on the bottom. Occasionally, the steering would be jerky.

I dont know where the water coming from, but very likely it was from the shifter boot, it sits outside almost all the time. Obviously, I will have to drain the oil a couple of times to flush the system, maybe it will allow the steering to function again.

I dont have any service manuals. I am a retired auto instructor, hydraulics and most general repairs dont scare me too much.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Wesley - Welcome to OTT (I'm a bit of a newbie myself)

Sounds like there's enough water in your hydraulic oil that with a full-working warmup it's flash boiling in a few places (steering controller for one). Maybe it's just years of rainwater (and fluid not changed) - or the fill cap is broken or missing etc.

Its very important to thoroughly drain and replace the fluid and filters to preserve the remaining life of the hydraulic system. May want to do it all a second time soon after. Water is very bad for hydraulic pumps and parts. Take care, Dick B

I went to Walmart and picked up 10 gallons of universal hydraulic fluid, about $35.00 each. I tried to locate the hydraulic filters but for some reason, they must really be hidden, no place to be found.

I loosened one of the front boom lift cylinder hoses and placed a large plastic tub below. With my son holding the hose, I started the engine and gently pressed the up lever.

Wow, at idle, it took about 5 minutes to fill the tub about half way, or close to 8 gallons, of really yellow soupy partially emulsified hydraulic fluid.

I then refilled with the new fluid, about 8 gallons. Immediately, I noticed a difference in the steering, it felt much smoother. The fluid is still a bit milky but not as bad as before.

I'm going to run it for a while then change the fluid again. Still, I need to find the filters, wherever they are. I did find out they are about $37.00 each.

On my M9000 the filters are behind the right side fuel tank. The 6800 is the same basic tractor so I would start there.

Ditto with Bulldog on filter location. Both the hyd filters on M4900 that I traded for M7040 were/are located on RH side of trans case inside right rear tire.

CAUTION: When you remove filter about 4 or 5 gallons of hyd oil will come out so be ready with a drain bucket or to limit oil escaping insert nozzle of a running shop vacuum hose in hyd filler hole while changing filters. Both tractors hyd filters had removable magnets inside of them.

I'm not so sure your draining method is a good idea. If you are running the engine and pumping the fluid out into a bucket, you risk running the fluid too low and damaging the hyd pump.
