I acquired a m4030DT with i believe the s2602 motor in non running condition. New battery, pulled the valve cover and all rockers move freely, loosened injection lines at injectors and i am getting fuel, took exhaust loose at manifold and I have gray smoke while cranking it over. Will not fire at all, even tried a shot of ether and still won't fire. Is it out of time? I don't think i would have smoke coming out the exhaust if it was a compression problem. If it is a timing issue, how do I check timing on this engine? Thank you

Take the ether can, walk outside and throw it in the trash can!
Ether and Kubota = Death / Destruction.

You need to get a compression test of all the cylinders.
Gray smoke is 100% indicative to low compression.

What is the easiest way to check compression on this engine? Pull injectors?
Compression tester in either the injector location or the glow plugs whichever is easier to get to them all.
I tend to test in the injectors more than the glowplugs.

Update, I compression tested it. Low compression on 5 out of the 6 cylinders. All i am finding for rebuild kits is Chinese kits on ebay. Any recommendations on overhaul kits?

Sadly that the norm for these older engines.
Most all the parts won't be any different than the originals.
Inspect the head gasket very carefully for quality as that's one of the issues that happen with cheap kits.

One thing to note: There are 2 types of pistons used in these, here is a kit listing and showing the two types of pistons.

There are a couple things that I recommend when you do a rebuild.
Put new liners in it and have them bored to size, don't do oversized pistons and rings.
If you have no bearing race surface issues that's great, but any wear at all get the crank cleaned up and use oversized bearings.
Either put new or rebuilt fuel injectors and new glow plugs in it.
It's also a good idea to have the injection pump rebuilt.
All new filters and fluids!

I appreciate the info. The kits i found came with new liners, I plan on sending the pump and injectors out when I tear it down. I am going to get new glow plugs as the old ones looked burnt and covered in oil when I pulled them to test compression which was also a pretty good indication that it needed overhauled
