Landscape Rake-Good Laugh

Wanted to share what I just discovered sitting here at work getting ready for lunch going over my project list for the week and weekend.

I recently cut down my asparagus patch which is 8 3' feet wide 25' rows and 2 or 3 feet at the end of each before grass starts.

I started raking it with a leaf rake as i wanted to take it down to the dirt then a couple inches more to remove weed seeds then lime and cover with leaves.

Could only rake about a 3" section before the pile was to big to move, this was becoming work so I quit after couple of hours making piles to resume another day.

As I said earlier was going over projects when it hit me.......all I need to do is hook up the landscape rake I bought last summer and drag to one end of the patch, load up contents in bucket and haul to burn pile.

Just wanted to share as I was creating a lot of work when I already had the tools to make the job MUCH easier and quicker.

That sounds about right I just installed a loader on my L1501. Its been such a habit to go for the wheel barrow for most of my tasks around the yard. I caught myself heading for the wheel barrow saturday to fill up the wood rack on the back porch and to pick up fallen limbs in the yard. Corrected that mistake, and went for the Kubota, and the task took half the time and 1/4 the effort

Only problem with a loader is that once you have one, there is no going back!

Now if only they would hand weed around the perennials....if I tried my landscape rake on my less than a year old 10 ft long asparagus patch I'd probably pull out all the crowns

Hey sheep farmer I understand.

When I planted mine I dug a trench 12 inches deep made a igloo with compost about 3 inches tall and spread crown over it and covered with dirt/sand/compost mix. My crowns are a foot in the ground.

I have 100 plants and every 5th year I intend to plant 50 more as I did last year going from 50 to 100. I buy 2 year old roots so that by 4th year I can cut 100% and not have to wait so long.

By adding 50 new every 5th year as the plants stop producing at age 15 to 20 or the yield is not worth the space they are taking up I will always have asparagus.

We love asparagus and yes the weeds are a problem as i loose interest after cutting is done to focus on the other veggies.
