The manual for the L5030 says that the hydraulic and transmission fluid filters should be changed every 200 hours (pp. 80-81), but the fluid itself should only be changed every 400 hours (p. 84).

This implies that when you change the filters, you do not fully drain the fluid. Yet the instructions for changing the filters say to drain the fluid in just the same way as the instructions for replacing the fluid itself.

What gives? Do you change the fluid and filters together every 200 hours on the HST? Or can/do you change the filters without first draining the fluid? Or do you drain the fluid only partly before changing the filters?

Any ideas?

Many thanks,
mebota

We just got everything in place and quickly replaced the filters without draining. Be sure to make sure your new filters come with magnets and the old ones come off with the old filters. We have several tractors and it's been a while, so I can't remember if both have magnets, but at least one does, might want to ask your dealer.

We only lost about a quart on the L5030, but it really gushes out our M8540. Some use a shop vac over the HST fill port or park on a slope, but we didn't.

Like TripleR said, a nice bank works good. Filter side uphill and the front of the tractor down a little will make filter changes go much easier for you.
