My story: Approx 2000hrs, L4740, she starts great when temp is above approx 45ish, but below that, very hard to start and it smokes a bit more at start (likely unburnt fuel, as it smells of diesel). I strongly suspect glow plug(s). Starts extremely hard when it is cooler out, but once started, or once engine is warm, no problem running/performing/ starting again.
I looked at a couple relays under dash and everything seemed good.
Ive never replaced glow plugs on this unit before but understand that I have to take off a manifold to access them.

My question: Do you also suspect glow plugs?
If so, any advice on replacing them on this tractor?
If not, whats ya guess?

Thanks,
Nick

I would also expect a problem with the glow plug circuit. But before I loaded up the "parts cannon", I would test the whole circuit.

The WSM should have the procedure for testing the system.

You can test the glow plugs individually: Glow plug testing D722

Different engine, but the method should be the same.

And yes, I think you are on the right track suspecting the glow plugs or glow plug control electronics from the symptoms you are describing.

Do you have a work shop manual? If not you can download it on link to kubotabooks.com

That's a good glow plug test. Also, check to make sure they're receiving power when they're supposed to.
