L4350 fuel knock problem

I have an L4350 tractor. It has a V2203 engine that I transplanted into the tractor. Initial start up went without a hitch. Idles and accelerates fine. After a few seconds of run time it develops a fuel knock. Injection pump shims are most likely not correct, there was a lot of time between removing and reinstalling.
The tractor has a loader attached. I probably need to get a handle on injection pump timing.
I would like to know if I have a port to view the flywheel timing marks, I can’t seem to find anything. Before the loader was attached I looked for timing marks thru the large six bolt holes on each side of the bell housing, didn’t see anything.
What is the general rule regarding advance or retarding of injection pump timing? Do I add or remove shims.
Thanks in advance

I’m going to change the injectors first.
I don’t have gray or white exhaust (excess/unburied fuel) which would suggest late injection. Also, I can’t speak to loss of power at this point.

I’ll report back once the injectors are changed. This engine is a idi engine no longer direct injection.
Thnx.

Was the injection pump off of the IDI or the DI engine?

It was mounted and in place. The pump was removed and remounted. I most likely didn’t keep track of the shims at the time.
I’ll do a compression check when I change the injectors.
Thanks.
I Will also do a better job on trying to locate the timing marks, now that I know where to look and do a start of delivery procedure.

Yea a spill test would help to get you in a better situation than you are now.

Are you sure it's a IDI engine?
A lot of sources and people assume that, #1 reefer units were IDI or #2 or Because it has screw in injectors instead of pencil injectors like the original V2203 in the tractor that makes it an IDI.

Was there no machine work needed to the bellhousing to get it to bolt up?

Also how did you get around the Hydraulic pump drive issue? As the reefer engines did not have that provision on the cams to drive the pump.
