Hello all, hoping I can find some direction here with my new-to-me L4200. I picked it up for a bargain being told the "clutch was bad". Figured at worst I split the machine and pop a clutch in it. Well, I pick it up, and notice it does in fact act like there is no clutch engagement.
I get it to my shop, and try running through all 8 gears and moving the shuttle back and forth and nothing. I try adjusting the dry clutch and the shift cable, get nothing. I then notice there's no oil on the sight glass. It takes 40qt's to fill, so it was damn near empty. I now have have slight clutch engagement through all 8 gears forward and reverse while the tractor is in the air on jack stands. So I throw tires back on, set it down, and massive slippage, doesn't want to move under its own power except in 4th gear forward or reverse. Dry clutch acts as it should, Independent PTO acts as it should, steering and PTO all act as they should.
This is now leading me to believe it is a GST related problem. (Who knows how long the trans/rear end had no fluid in it) maybe fried the clutch pack. So I start taking some pressure readings. GST system pressure was a little low (about 340psi) and relief valve setting was a little low (about 400psi). I adjusted them both accordingly at the regulator valve. Then checked pilot pressure through all 8 gears in forward and reverse, and it was perfect (360psi). Next I moved to GST clutch pack pressure and got about 50-80psi, super low, forward and reverse, in all gears,. When shifting through gears the pressure did drop and raise like it should. I then took apart GST valve, cleaned, and inspected everything, paying special attention to modulate valve, modulate check valve, and clutch valve. Re-assembled, and same results.
Process of elimination leads me to believe I have a fried GST clutch pack? What do yall think?? Tractor does not leak a drop of fluid, so I don't know if this was a sabotage deal or what, but who knows how long it was ran with no fluid. Either way I think I have to split this thing now. Anything else you guys can think of to look out for? And where is the best place to get GST clutch parts for an old rig like this?
Thanks!!
