Hello - first time poster. I have a Kubota L295DT. On Monday I was smoothing ruts out of the driveway with a box spreader in the pouring rain. The tractor was running fine, no unusual noises. As I was finishing up I stopped the tractor to shift into a higher gear to travel to the barn. I don't remember clearly, but I think I may have done a shift where the gears grind a little - but it wasn't a lot. Shortly afterwards the tractor was making a grinding/grumbling noise I have never heard before. The tractor engine was running fine, the noise occurred when it was in gear moving. I limped into the barn very slowly because it seemed to not make the noise at a real slow speed. This morning I checked to make sure I didn't have anything engaged that might have caused the noise. Tractor started right up, running fine - same noise if moving forward or backward. I had my husband move forward and backward a little to see if I could hear where the noise was coming from. He doesn't hear too well, so could not help with that. Hard to tell, but sounded like maybe a little in front of the driver, under the gear shift? Didn't want to make the noise too much in case it was causing more damage. Any thoughts to help diagnose and at least get us going in the right direction for repair? Thanks.

Are you having problems putting it into gear? Check to see if the hi/lo selector isnt hung up inbetween ranges first.

I'd first rule out the throw out bearing. Does it continue to make the noise with the clutch fully depressed (engine running)? How about running in neutral clutch out? Whatever it is it doesn't sound good. Next thing I'd try is find a hill, put the hi\lo and transmission in neutral and roll down the hill listening for the noise.

Thanks very much for the help. The noise is not present when the tractor is in 2 wheel drive - just 4 wheel drive. The noise is there when the tractor is in neutral, clutch out, in hi and going down a hill. I didn't remember to try it with the hi/lo in neutral as well. Will do that later. Am wondering if it would be something with the front axle or whatever connects the rear drive to the front? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Vic: I'm sort of mechanically able, I do have the shop manual and I have changed the transmission fluid. I don't have the manual with me right now (I am at work). Is removing the top of the transmission something you have to have experience to do?
