I recently rescued a L285 sitting in a pasture covered in vines. I have been able to get it running and everything seems to work aside from some rodent damage to component wiring in the dash. The steering was the biggest issue which I was able to tighten the adjustment screw and it is much better. However, it is no where near in spec according to the manual(much more than 2 inches of freeplay). But the adjustment screw is bottomed out. Does anyone know if the steering can be taken out and shimmed or if the steering box would need to be rebuilt in order to resolve this issue?

It would need rebuilt if you can get the parts.
Some of the steering boxes are easy to get parts for some are not.
