So I was in the process of changing my fuel filter and there is no shut off
from the fuel tank. I was unsure of clamping the hose off with vise grips
to stop the flow, I need to replace the fuel hose anyway so I'm going to wait
till it's almost empty.

I bought some clear 3/8 hose from McMaster Carr that's OK with diesel fuel.
On Ebay I found a inline shut off that is OK with diesel fuel.

COLDER PLC NSF
#PLCD17006 Inline Coupler,Acetal,Shut-Off,Barbed $12.68
#PLCD22006 3/8 HOSE BARB VALVED IN-LINE COUPLING INSERT $13.97
I also bought a 3/8 brass elbow to put under the fuel tank barb so the fuel hose
is all in a straight line.

Acetal on the CPC web site says it works well with diesel fuel also.
I will try to post photos when installed.

Thanks for your reply, I have the inline disconnect that shuts off on each part that I posted above.
As soon as you disconnect this the inner valve shuts each end off.
The only problem I found is it's a bit long and I'm thinking of coiling the new hose I bought. I'm still working out this issue on the length.
