I have a L185 that won't turn over. We suspect it is an ignition problem because when we turn the keys we don't get any lights coming on in the console or the headlights turning on when we turn the key to the last position. The water pressure gauge will jump when we turn the key to the first position but we don't get anything from the other positions.

The tractor was working fine yesterday but when we went to start it today we are getting nothing.

Can anyone offer some advice. We use the tractor to help run our summer kids camp and really need to get it up and running as soon as possible.

I'd suggest to begin by cleaning the battery terminals and both battery cables. Be sure to clean the end of the negative cable that attaches to the tractor. Remove that ground and clean with a wire brush.

Be sure your battery is charged/good.

Ditto. And test the battery after charging, with a modern electronic load tester...:D

Im reminded of a time recently where owner forgot about turning the glow/start knob for starting. Wasnt me, but cant remember who. I had trouble with the clutch switch wiring, had to jump at starter when i first got it. My L1501 ignition switch goes on and switches lights on high and low beam. Start is on other switch.

Removing cables, both positive and negative at both ends and cleaning should do the trick if battery and starter are in good condition.

Yeah, yeah, it was me. comes from owning too many tractors, and forgetting which switch does what on each tractor. And being in a hurry. Sorry, no pictures...:D:D

I too am having a similar problem on an older model L185. My key just doesnt want to turn as freely as it used to and have to fight to get it in the right position to start. Then often no lights. I'd love to know how to fix it.Thanks

Have you tried lubricating it. There are special lubricants for locks not just any old stuff. Most hardware stores will sell it.

If the lube job does not work, then a new switch is the next step.

Before starting to change it: remove battery negative cable.
Take lots of pictures of back of the switch so you get wires unto correct switch terminals of new switch.

Put wires unto switch before installing in dash.

Get a new key first and see if that helps. They are cheap ($2?) and universal so the dealer can get you one or two to keep around.
