Hi
just bought this l35 after Getting home I realized it knocks. This sounds like a rod knock, it’s pretty bad and getting worse.
The sound has the cadence of a rod knock but I hear it more in the clutch area than in the crank case area. I am wondering if I can change the rod bearings in place without removing the engine.
Thanks for any advice, Tom

Check your WSM. How many hours? Did the PO give any warranty? Hopefully you purchased it a at a real good price. If it's a rod knock ensure to carefully mic and inspect the three rod journals, if any deficiencies, you may be looking a a complete rebuild. Good luck

I "think" you can pull the pan after removing the subframe and front drive shaft. The subframe is a pain. At that point you're a few bolts away from pulling the engine, which, likely if a rod bearing is gone, you're gonna have to do anyway. Generally, if the bearing is bad so is the crank and rod(s).

Possibility maybe a worn clutch spline? I've seen it a bunch of times but I don't recall any noises. I even have an L35 flywheel used as a bench grinder stand, leftover from changing the clutch on an L35. I hated working on them but the job paid the bills.
