I tried to split my Kubota B20 to replace the input shaft seal. Is there a trick to splitting this tractor? The problem I have is that the engine shroud or surrounds is in conflict with the frame! I tried to twist the engine or tilt it to finish the split, but have not got anywhere yet! It is 97 B20 with Hydrostatic Transmission. HST input shaft is leaking. I know after the split, I have to take other parts to get to this shaft and seal. I have the complete Service Manual, but do not see any specifics on this. I also read a lot of other trends about splitting of B20, but no-one has talked about this problem. I try to see if I can post couple of pictures to clarify what I am talking about. Thanks for any help and pectoral explanations.

on B20/B21, in order to access the HST for seal replacement you don't have to remove the engine.

Remove loader
remove backhoe
remove rops canopy assembly
then you remove the rear fenders, floorboard, dash pedestal-just leave all the mechanical stuff intact in the dash, just take the plastic surround off
disconnect any linkages to the brakes, diff lock, hoses, pipes etc that connect the rear to any other part of the tractor.
drain all the hydraulic oil
remove lower frame assembly (this is the big part that holds the backhoe and loader, goes front to back)
now you have a basic b series tractor, split it as normal by removing the 8 (I think) bolts that hold the hst to the frame, then just pull the rear part away from the frame and the hst will be staring you in the face.
now you'll have to partially disassemble the hst to get the seal out, also inspect the drive shaft and make sure there's no grooving at all--if there is replace it. Make sure you replace the gaskets too. Once the tractor is reassembled those parts become inaccessible again short of splitting.

I hate working on them. BX's I hate worse.

I do appreciate your reply to my dilema. I got this post a little too late not split the tractor from the engine. I finally figured out that I have to drop the frame partially and got access to the HST, removed the seal with a hook from outside and replaced it with a new one. A note for those who read this thread: "Be carefull installing a new seal! If you are installing the seal from outside with a socket, make sure you don't hit it too hard. The seal can go too far in and then you either have to take apart the HST (Painfull process) to remove and re-set it, or you have to pull the seal out with a hook and use a new seal."
