So i've been wanting a tiller for a while now and i stumbled upon one on Craigslist today, an hour drive away. For $950 barely used ($1589 at local stores) I just couldn't pass it up. Used tillers seem to sell fast and this one was priced to sell no doubt.
It's a forward rotation with L shaped tines, 42 in total (7x6). The track on my b8200d is right about 56" wide. Finding a used 4ft tiller that adjusts to cover one track is almost impossible. I haven't got to use it yet and not sure when i will.
My thought is that with the forward rotation and if i keep a semi shallow cutting depth, that my machine should be able to handle it decently well, and i think being a gear driven machine that it will handle it slightly better (Hp wise, not PTO engagement wise) than the same machine with an HST.

What say ye? Give'er a go and see huh?!

Congrats on the CL find.

You have the right idea about taking it slow and shallow.
Forward tine tillers do not require as much traction as reverse ones do.
They are more nimble in rocky terrain and handle tree roots better.

Where in North Illinois are you? North of Bloomington? North of Ottawa?

North of Ottawa about 20-25min, in between some cornfields. Really nice soil on my property.

If i make two passes, one shallow and the following slightly deeper, am i thinking right that my first pass, i would keep the rear hinged door up as much as possible, to let the soil escape continuous pulverizing? Then on the second pass drop it down?

You don't have to adjust the hinged door since it moves as needed. What the hinged rear door is for is to level the dirt.

Tilled a 305ft by 100ft area if my property today. It was used as a sweet corn plot at one time and was really rough to mow. I'm looking to plant grass seed so I can mow it with the zero turn. Anyway, tilled it twice, once east west and then a deeper second pass, north south.
Turned out really nice. I didn't even mow before hand and the grass/weeds were two to three feet tall. The little 16pto HP b8200, handled it very well. :D
Started at 11am and was done by 7pm. Thankfully my property is old corn field, so there are no rock's or tree roots to contend with. Just nice tillable soil.
