This happened at the end of our street today:



Our street is right past that turn. This is a state highway that they closed. It will remain closed in both directions from our street intersection until the cleanup is complete - Monday at the earliest according to the DEP.

Speeding
under the influence
on the phone
lack of experience
all of the above.

Oil trucks can be tricky the load sloshing around can pull it right off the road if the driver isn't paying attention.

Distracted..... possibly. My bet is too fast on the winding road. Load started sloshing and over he went.

Driver at work used to haul tankers and drive a vac truck. Said that he would prefer to be either full or empty. But partial loads were a bear. All that liquid will slosh side to side and forward and backwards. You had to take corners gingerly. To fast and all that weight shifts to one side.

Said on winding roads it was like hauling a pendulum.

And then ......they would have the truckers haul it away, ......but only if each driver had 3 vaccine shots.

Fuel oil delivery trucks have baffles on the insides of the compartments, so sloshing isn't the problem that it once was. A lot depends on how it was loaded, and which compartment was being drained as to how it will handle weight shifts. If the driver dumped a complete compartment, instead of keeping the load balanced, then he could get into drivability issues, but most are trained not to do that. The last thing that you want is an empty compartment and a full compartment side by side. When a compartment gets to half full, you switch to the next compartment and pull that one down halfway. This is how it was done 50 years ago, but I have been out of the loop since then, so all that I can do is assume that they are still built the same way today.

It's a mess! In CT the DEP is really tough. Since yesterday all I can hear is the truck back up alarms constantly. They are going to haul out a massive amount of dirt.
That side of the road is a watershed area - how many times will that double the cleanup bill? They are also concerned that everyone in the area is on wells, like me.
Driver is ok. No word on what caused it. That portion of the road is steep but fairly straight. The 'S' curve ahead has been the site of many many accidents.

I was wrong, the accident happened right at the curve. I walked up there with the dog. After making nice with the local police at the end of our street he let me walk up the now closed road. According to him the town is supplying 24hr police officers at the barricade until at least Wednesday. The DEP said they are going to dig up the asphalt road. Not sure what they are going to do after that - all the asphalt plants are closed during the winter. . .
The oil is well into the watershed land as you can see from the 3rd pic.

As a truck driver for the past 35 years, I can tell you EXACTLY why it happened....

It's the so called "shortage of truck drivers" in this country.

As a result, they are recruiting anyone that breaths to get their CDL license. expediting the process.
Pumping out those CDL's as fast as they can

A good majority of these new drivers are inner city kids that can barely drive their honda civic... never mind a class B straight job OR a class A tractor trailer. They have little to no skill and are a danger on todays roadways....

The same thing goes for most of the Amazon and Fed Ex drivers... school bus drivers too ..... But thats another kettle of fish.

Be careful out there...

I know exactly where that truck rolled over. On route 42
absolutely no reason for it. been down that road 1000 times.

Also thats the second heating oil truck to roll over recently..... there was another one in Bristol not too long ago.

Incompetence... plain & simple.

I don't remember any "no thru truck signs" on 42
Trucks go through there all the time.

You are both correct - the 'No Thru Trucks' signs came down 3 or 4 years ago iirc. They had been up for 10 years or more.

100% drivers fault as road looks OK...

I was following an 'oversized' load the other day, QEW in hamilton before the Skyway bridge.
Lowboy trailer ,maybe 3" off the pavement, 4 axles out back with a HUGE 'storage' container on it. His escort was waay ahead of him and waay behind, so far behind there were 3 cars inbetween them ! As if that's not scary enough, he was doing 120kliks ! 72 MPH !!! I didn't know it was even legal for a bigrig to go that fast...
